22nd August, 2014 An interval for questions and a tea break are scheduled into this two-part free event

Lecture - Finding Fashion in the Shadows: Silhouettes 1760-1860
22 August, 14.00 - 15.00
Suzanne Rowland, of the University of Brighton presents a talk that demonstrates how silhouettes –also known as shadows, shades, or profiles in miniature – offer a unique perspective on the wearing of fashionable dress. Unlike the stylised fashion plates of contemporary publications they offer a more characterful and individual representation of contemporary fashions. From the heyday of silhouette production in the late 18th to mid-19th centuries we will see that physical imperfections were not overlooked, and neither age nor social stranding were barriers to a person having their likeness captured on paper, card, ceramic, or on the reverse of convex glass.

This talk will last 40 minutes and will be followed by a 20 minute break for tea and biscuits

Lecture - The Shadow that Will Not Fade: The Silhouette's Decline and Revival 1860-2014
22 August, 15.00 - 16.00
Dr Annebella Pollen, of the University of Brighton explores how, with the arrival of affordable studio photography from the 1860s, silhouettes declined in popularity as a form of cheap portraiture. As a stylistic motif, however, the silhouette endured. In the second half of the 19th century, it found a new home among caricaturists, illustrators and avant-garde painters, and it bloomed again in a nostalgic Edwardian revival. This talk documents the silhouette's changing meanings and purposes after the birth of photography, and assesses its current revival at the cutting edge of arts practice in the 21st century.

This talk will last for 40 minutes and will be followed by questions, a chat and a chance to look around the exhibition
